"Girls with asses like mine do not talk to boys with faces like yours"

Last night we decided quite ex tempore to watch She's the Man. I have seen it before but It was still extremely funny. And in a matter of fact I could say it's the most funniest teen comedy made so far. Movies in this genre usually just suck deeply so it's a real gem.

I assume that most of you my non-existing loyal readers have already seen this movie so I try to keep the long story short. The heroine of this movie is Viola who loves to play soccer. But her team got cancelled and her school does not allow her to play in the boy's team even though she is a better player than most of them. And meanwhile Viola's twin brother Sebastian runs to London even though he should be going to a new school... So since they are twins Viola decides to act Sebastian, join his school team and finally beat the team that did not allow her play in the first place.

I know. It sounds like a really bad movie, but what makes this movie so cool is the way Amanda Bynes acts her role as Sebastian. She is absolutely brilliant. So reevaluate if you skipped this film earlier.

Here is an official trailer for you:

Dig Deep

Yesterday my sort of a friend said that I'm boring nowadays. I don't find myself boring. There just ain't so much drama going on in my life now when I'm plain old. When I was younger I had all kinds of crisis. Just say one and I can assure I used to have it. I like my life now when everything has finally settled out. OK, I still may have some major issues but I'm totally dealing with them. So I guess I just seem like a boring person but if you dig deep enough you'll find out that I'm much more than just a pretty face.

Two of Us

I was going to blog on Monday and again on Wednesday. Actually, I wrote something yesterday but it was so bad that I decided not to post it. I do have a nice collection of drafts by the way. If I write more than one line I usually save them anyway.

I have started to read books again. The only reason for this is that I found a section of English literature from my library. I have been there before but only little while ago I realized that I can actually borrow all those cool books and take them home and read them too. I find reading books in English somehow more rewarding than reading Finnish books. I'm not just reading a book, I'm actually learning a language. Well... It has been years since I used dictionary while reading a book but I guess I'm still learning some grammar, right?

Anyway. I read this book called "Two of Us" by Brendan Halpin. It's one those quite short novels you read within a few hours. I don't normally borrow books which have less than 300 pages but this book seemed so cool I just had to borrow it. And what made it so cool then? I'm always into books that use modern ways to tell a story. This book was a mix of regular diary, e-mails, IM's, text messages and minidisc recordings. It may sound like a complicated mixture but the story was very easy to follow.

The main character in this novel is a 14 years old Rosalind. Her both lesbian moms had just died in a car accident and she finds herself living with Sean, the sperm donor, whom she doesn't really know. She is grieving and gets in to all kind of trouble, but Sean struggles as well with his new-found fatherhood. Even though these themes are quite dark it still manages to be one of the most hilarious books I've read in a while.

R.I.P Glamour

My year long relationship with Glamour Magazine (British Edition) has finally come to an end. I'm not buying it anymore. It used to be so good when I started to read it but issue after issue it got worst and worst. Elina said that they are even reusing some of their old articles, like no one notices. She's been reading it for ages so she knows what she's talking about. But I feel a bit sorry for Julia though. I always brought the latest issue with me to school so she can read it too. It saved us from so many boring lectures. She will be devastated.

And now to the good news: Someone has subscribed to me at Blogilista! My blog has been listed since August 2006 and after a while I got used to the idea that no one will ever subscribe to me (why would?). But it happened! Someone finds my blog amusing! Someone finds my blog worth a reading!

But just to be me, the pessimist, she/he won't last long.

The Bitch Goddess Notebook

Every now and then I enjoy reading books in English. This time I chose "The Bitch Goddess Notebook" by Martha O'Connor. I expected it to be chick lit like Bridget Jones's Diary or something else very light to read. But this book was heavy indeed.
In a small-town high school in 1988, three misfit girls join forces to form the Bitch Goddesses, a take-no-prisoners gang of fierce teenage rebellion. Rennie, the stunningly attractive straight-A student, finds herself way out of her depth when she embarks on an affair with her married teacher. Cherry builds a shrine to Princess Diana in her bedroom while nursing her hippy mother through her coke-fuelled rages. Amy tears up her cheerleader's uniform while her drunken parents concentrate on presenting a façade of perfect family life to the outside world. The three girls swear to stick together, whatever life throws at them, until one night when something so horrific happens it shatters their friendship for ever.

Orion books

The book alternates between past and present life and each chapter is cycling between the three main character. I always love books which are written in this way. It gives the book more depth since the story will have more than just one side. Anyway. I stumbled across the Internet that people compare this book to the Secret History by Donna Tart. In a way there share some elements but in my opinion The Bitch Goddess Notebook is nothing like the Secret History at all. These girls in this book ain't no saints: they mess with drugs, prescription pills, alcohol, married men , boys and blood. It quite disturbing actually because there wasn't much else. They're were just totally fucked up till the very end.

It took time to understand what this book was about, and still I'm not sure if I understood it at all. Was it a survival story? A story about friendship? Was it supposed to warn us where a certain lifestyle can lead us? I honestly don't know. It was thrilling but at the same time it was total waste of time. And the ending sucked.
